Why a Pregnant Woman should not Drink Alcohol

Why a pregnant woman should not drink alcohol.

What make alcohol so bad for a pregnant mother? To begin with alcohol is very injurious for human development. Alcohol has the ability to cross the placenta to the baby. Compared to an adult, a foetus immature body is unable to break down the alcohol at the same rate as the mother. This means that the level of alcohol will be much higher in the baby’s blood and it will remain elevated for a longer time. This increased level means the baby may be affected by Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD).

What is Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD)?

FASD is a broad term used for a range of disorders triggered by fetal alcohol exposure. These disorders may be in relation to physical health, body development or even nerves behavior related. For most cases FASD is not identified during birth. When a child reaches 3-5 years most of these disorders become noticeable especially when child goes to school and start having difficulties in learning.

A recent study has shown that some of these defects include lowered infertility in male children, less effective suckling, irregular sleeping patterns, learning difficulties, hyperactivity, slowed development and even organ harm. Some years back the doctor were not against the occasional intake of one glass, but the current study has indicated even the allowed glass can cause defects.

In the long run, foetal alcohol spectrum disorder may cause misguided behaviors that may be misunderstood by the society. For instance a child with FASD may be regarded defiant while the major reason for their behavior is because they are hyperactive, due to defects as a result of alcohol intake during their early stages of their formation. Continuous accusation may make this individuals develop secondary defensive behavior that may be worse off. A hyperactive child may end up in violence typically develop defensive behavior.

Below is a list of misconducts that may develop as a result of FASD

  • School drop out
  • Early pregnancy or unplanned pregnancy
  • Alcohol and substance abuse
  • Sexual perversion
  • Involvement in robbery and terrorism

Every time a pregnant woman takes alcohol she should think over and known the harm they bring to their children-a child future could be damaged. Regardless of the magnitude, every glass of alcohol will results in some side effects.

Every child deserves a good and fair environment to grow, especially when they are still developing inside the mother. Letting alcohol steal the future, esteem, mannerism or even not being able to enjoy a normal life is the most underserving situation that every pregnant woman has control of, by simply saying no to that single glass.
